PR Agencies Are the Sleeping Giants of GEO

Looking in the Wrong Place
Every business in every sector is currently asking a version of the same question. How do we get found inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, not just Google? It is fast becoming the question that keeps marketing leaders up at night, and most of them are looking for the answer in entirely the wrong place.
They assume Generative Engine Optimisation is some new technical discipline, a set of prompts and schema tweaks bolted onto an existing SEO programme. It is not. GEO is the fundamentals of Brand, Content and Media, connected and modernised for how people now research and buy in the AI era.
Why PR Agencies Hold the Winning Hand
Citation sources for LLMs are in effect Media, inclusive of owned (which includes your website), paid and earned. Earned has always been the hardest of the three to secure, because nobody can simply buy their way into it. That is precisely why it carries the most weight with a model, too. Independent, third party coverage is judged the most credible, authoritative and trustworthy source available when an LLM is forming an answer to a customer's question. A brand cannot self-declare its way into that kind of trust. It has to be earned.
That is the exact skill PR agencies already have. It is what they have always sold, long before anyone was talking about citations or answer engines. Which is why PR agencies are, in truth, the sleeping giants of GEO. The capability was already there. It simply had not yet been pointed at the right target.
Compare that with the position most other agency types find themselves in. A paid media specialist can buy attention, but attention is not the same as trust, and a model can tell the difference. A digital agency can build the technical foundations, useful undoubtedly, but foundations do not earn citations on their own. PR agencies are starting several steps ahead, with the hardest problem already half solved.
The Skill of Triangulation
There is a second advantage that gets overlooked, because it sits underneath the obvious one. GEO is not solved by media alone. It requires Brand, Content and Media to work as one connected system, each reinforcing the others rather than operating in separate lanes.
Good PR agencies already think this way. Triangulating a brand's positioning, its content and its media relationships into a single coherent story is the job, whether or not anyone has ever called it that. A media only agency can win coverage. A content only agency can produce material. Neither, on its own, builds the kind of consistent, citable authority that a model comes to trust over time. That takes all three, working together, and it is a rarer skill than the industry likes to admit.
From Instinct to Evidence
This is also where GEO offers PR agencies something they have wanted for a long time: hard evidence that earned coverage actually works. Media planning has traditionally leaned on relationships, instinct on what a journalist or publication might run and conventional metrics such as reach and readership. None of that disappears, but it can now be checked against something more concrete.
Tracking how models actually cite and reference a client, and which sources they draw on to do it, turns that evidence into media priorities rather than hunches. An agency that knows which outlets and which stories genuinely earn visibility inside AI answers is planning with data behind it, not just experience. That is a stronger pitch to a client, and a stronger justification for the next quarter's targets.
Owning the Whole Brief
Here is where the opportunity goes further than most agencies are currently looking. GEO does not have to mean adding an extra line item to a media plan. It can mean owning the whole brief: brand messaging, content and all three forms of media, even where parts of the delivery are outsourced elsewhere.
Agencies that build a GEO methodology properly into their client work will move well ahead of those still selling coverage the old way. And PR agencies start that race from a stronger position than any other agency type, because they already hold the hardest part of the equation. Brand messaging architecture needs to adapt for an AI ready audience. Content principles need to evolve for how models actually read and weigh material. Media measurement requires a combination of legacy metrics and GEO science. Then beyond this an agency can hold the strategy and the client relationship while outsourcing parts of the delivery (such as website front and back end development to improve technical and structural GEO performance), and still own the whole brief in the eyes of the client. What matters is who understands the fundamentals well enough to direct them. That understanding, more than any particular tool, is the actual barrier to entry, and it is one that PR agencies are far closer to clearing than most of the industry currently realises.
The Position to Take
None of this requires PR agencies to become something new. It requires them to recognise what they already are. The skill that has always been hardest to sell, the ability to earn independent, trusted coverage, has just become the single most valuable currency in how brands get found.
The watch out for PR agencies is working with GEO platforms that don't support them with this holistic approach and don't play to their strengths. The market is becoming flooded with GEO platforms that by and large do the same thing. From market leaders such as Profound, Scrunch, Peec AI, all the way down, the platforms all run prompts repeatedly through LLMs, providing reporting analytics and may offer AI generated recommendations. This approach is far too shallow and should be hygiene - and aside from providing a view on a brand's GEO performance, provides no effective or sustained solutions. These platforms are also built for SEO leads, not PR agencies, and therein lies their biggest weakness - approaching GEO from a technical perspective first not a brand perspective first.
With the right GEO platform, PR agencies have the opportunity to seize control of this rapidly growing category. And it's bigger than GEO. It is to become the architects of how brands build trust and generate demand in an AI-first buying world. Those that move now have a genuine opportunity to redefine their value to clients.
